Your outdoor area should be a reflection of your taste. Pick a theme and stick with it to reduce your design options. “Perhaps you’ll draw inspiration from a Japanese garden, surrounding the area with a bamboo fence and focusing on a relaxing palette of evergreens and mosses, with a stone walkway and trickling fountain to finish the appearance,” suggests Ryan Reed-Baum, TurLog Siding CEO. “If you want to conjure up summers spent in the English countryside, go for a cottage garden with wildflowers, a cobblestone fire pit and aged wood benches. The same motifs may also function in a tiny balcony by adjusting the greenery and furniture to the room’s scale. It’s all about making sense of your space. You want to feel transported when you go outdoors into the garden.”

Divide Your Outdoor Space into Sections

Don’t think about your outdoor space as a singular unit, no matter how big or small. Dividing the area into sections will make it more functional and useful. “Think about carving out separate seating and dining areas. Benches are one of my favorite outdoor furniture pieces to create this effect. They are used for seating, accent tables or even ottomans. Plus, they are great to display planters and candles,” shares Annemarie Schumacher, event planner.

Incorporate Greenery

Besides using weather-friendly materials, fabrics and furnishings designed to last, a touch of greenery can instantly transform your outdoor space–no matter its size. “Incorporate greenery. Our favorites include banana leaf trees and orchids to add a touch of nature. High-design planters can be a creative way to show off one’s style,” explains Lance Thomas from Thomas Guy Interiors.

Invite More Colors With Accessories

While you don’t have many walls to bring colorful elements, you can achieve a similar effect by adding colored accents. “A few ways to make an outdoor space more eye-catching is to use patterned throw pillows that can take on the color scheme you already have inside your house. Take similar throw pillows and blankets that you would use indoors and outdoors! This will make the space appear larger and more cohesive. The second thing we recommend is to incorporate a water feature, be it a koi pond or a waterfall; it’ll make one’s space feel serene with the calming sounds of the water,” shares Brittany Farinas from House of One.
